Future-proofing On-Track Machines: ETCS and the Road Ahead

Over the past few evenings, our team has had the pleasure of joining VolkerRail Ltd out on the network — witnessing firsthand the dedication, skill, and sheer capability of the UK’s on-track machine (OTM) workforce.

These machines are true workhorses. Night after night, they keep the railway moving: delivering essential maintenance, ensuring infrastructure is safe, and supporting the smooth running of a transport system relied upon by millions. And behind every piece of equipment is a highly trained team making it all happen.

But as the UK transitions toward a digital railway, one question is becoming increasingly important:

What does ETCS mean for the OTM community? Will on-track machines need to operate under ETCS rules and signalling? And if so, what will fitment, operations, and competency look like for those working with these specialised vehicles?

The future isn’t fully defined yet — but one thing is clear: preparation will be key.
